Paint with Water books were brilliant - they allowed anyone with basic motor skills to exhibit (a modicum of) artistic talent.
The colors would magically appear in the appropriate place when you used a wet paintbrush across the pages. The trick, however, was not to oversaturate the paper - lest it dry all wrinkly, like the back of an octogenarian's hands.
I think that this could very possibly be how Thomas Kinkade still paints...
