Feed Me Now! Potato rolled tacos

I have a newly minted fascination with potato rolled tacos, mainly because they are one of few meat-free alternatives at my favorite hole-in-the-wall taco shops... I mean, a girl can't eat a 4 pound veggie burrito every day. No, really - I know because I've tried.

Now, creating glorious potato rolled tacos can be tricky... the potato filling must be properly seasoned or all you will taste is the fried tortilla. While Santana's has a fairly tasty version of potato rolled tacos (called "calitapas"), the potato to tortilla ratio is not quite right.

By far, the best potato rolled tacos that I have had the pleasure to meet are offered at La Puerta.  While this is not a typical taco shop (it has actual silverware), it is SO worth finding parking in the Gaslamp to frequent La Puerta.  Their margaritas and micheladas are fantastic... and their potato cheese rolled tacos are stupendous!  Topped with pico de gallo, sour cream, and cotija cheese, and served with a chile de arbol dipping sauce, these are ridonkulously tasty. I ordered some to share with my happy hour companion, and ended up eating the whole plate myself (I know, oink, oink)... it was the perfect size for a light dinner.

Even better - during happy hour, all drinks and appetizers are half price, so the rolled tacos are only $3 for an order.

  1. You should try making your own! I've made them with a mixture of mashed potato and garbanzo bean filling - delicious!
